Shoes – Tomorrow Night – Live

Standard

Shoes played at McAuliffe’s Pub in Racine, WI, last night – 3/9/13. They’re prepping for showcases at SXSW this week. I was able to get video of them performing Tomorrow Night from Present Tense. They sounded AMAZING! My camera is a tiny Powershot – images great, sound, not so much.

Shoes – The Joke’s On You

Standard

A new video is up from Shoes’ new album Ignition. The Joke’s On You.

The Joke’s On You
Lyrics by Shoes

Composed by Jeff Murphy

——-

You might find another noble cause
To hang upon your wall
And fill your hallowed halls

But in time your words will seal your fate
So I’m picking up the pace
And laughing in your face

‘Cause the joke’s on you
That’s the way it goes
When everybody knows
That the joke’s on you

I don’t need to say
That it’s funny how things change
Your point of view
When the joke’s on you

Now the joke’s on you
Strange to think that how
It’s not so funny now
That the joke’s on you

I was your amusement for a while
Now you can’t crack a smile
I’m laughing all the while

You can’t see the forest for your needs
Despite your desperate pleas
It just occurred to me

Now the joke’s on you
It’s right before your eyes
It comes as no surprise
That the joke’s on you

Now you know
That it’s funny how love goes
From hot to cold

When the joke’s on you
That’s the way it goes
When everybody knows
That the joke’s on you

Now the joke’s on you
The joke’s on you

An amusing review of Shoes Ignition

Standard

Just saw this posted as a link on Facebook. Most interesting start to a review of Ignition that I’ve read yet.

“I was never much of a fan of Shoes. For me, listening to Murphy and the boys was the equivalent of going out to eat at the Olive Garden. It’s okay for a change, but I always leave craving something a bit more substantive.

If the old Shoes was a trip to the Olive Garden, their new release, “Ignition”, is an invitation to dine at the Vatican. With the Pope. And he lets you wear the funny hat.”

Thank you for the very early morning laugh, Richard Rossi.

Shoes – Hot Mess Video

Standard

Another video is up from the new Shoes album Ignition. It’s for Hot Mess. Do you like cats? You’ll like this video

Hot Mess
Lyrics by Shoes

Composed by Murphy/Klebe/Murphy

——-

She’s got good motor skills
When she’s stuffed to the gills
So honey say what you will

She’s no stranger to pain
She sleeps in the rain
‘Cause she’s got nothin’ to gain

Ooh she’s a hot mess
Been tryin’ to pin her down
Such a hot mess
She’s bound to be makin’ rounds

She’s a hot mess

She does her personal best
With stains on her dress
She’s a reliable wreck

She’s been payin’ her dues
With her skanky tattoos
And her sensible shoes

CHORUS

She lets her juices flow
When she’s layin’ low
Cuz that’s how she rolls

She’s got a lopsided grin
When she don’t know where she’s been
She’s my possible kin

CHORUS

She comes across as a man
With her spray-on tan
But she don’t give a damn

She wears her hair in a bun
When she gets the job done
She takes no shit from no one

CHORUS

She’s a hot mess
Couldn’t care less
Makes a hot mess

Spam spam spam spam

Standard

This is a tiny blog in the world of blogs. Truly filled with the random thoughts of me. I can mention something as a one off or I can hyperfocus on something that I love. For instance, did y’all know that Shoes has a new album out?

What amazes me is when I look at my stats for the blog and I see all the spam comments. Like, how do they find me? And who the hell taught them English? These are some examples of what I found this morning.

Excellent post. I used to be checking continuously this blog and I’m impressed! Extremely useful information specifically the last phase. I take care of such info much. I was looking for this certain info for a very lengthy time. Thank you and good luck.

My brother suggested I would possibly like this blog. He was once totally right. This publish actually made my day. You can not believe just how much time I had spent for this info! Thank you!

I take pleasure in, cause I discovered just what I used to be taking a look for. You’ve ended my four day long hunt! God Bless you man. Have a great day. Bye

That last one? It was a comment on my rent a cat post, where I compared my dog to a TV demon. If they were really hunting 4 days for info on a demon dog, they obviously don’t know how to use Google.

I know they’re spammers but I really don’t get the point. Are there that many clueless people in the world who go “Oh, that is so legitimate. Let me click that link and go to that obviously respectful website…” I’m sure they must believe in Nigerian Princes and long lost dead relatives who want to leave them their fortunes, too.

I leave you with the inimitable Monty Python.

Shoes – Head vs Heart

Standard

Another video is up from the new Shoes album Ignition. It’s the opening track – Head vs Heart.

Head vs Heart
Lyrics by Shoes

Composed by Gary Klebe

——-

Time is chasin’ me down
Somewhere I got turned around
You can try as you will
You’ll be the death of me still
‘Til the end, I won’t breathe easy again

Trouble from the start
Don’t go where you wanna go
Head vs. heart
Go where you wanna go

Long gone, never look back
So fast, no time to react
Some things will just never change
Logic is all down the drain
We pretend over and over again

Tearin’ me apart
Don’t go where you wanna go
Head vs. heart
Go where you wanna go

Time is wastin’ away
Vain wait, the name of the game
Everything I thought is true
Lies are the essence of you
In the end, I won’t breathe easy again

Trouble from the start
Don’t go where you wanna go
Head vs. heart
Go where you wanna go

Head vs. heart

Shoes – In On You

Standard

The first official video is up from the new Shoes album Ignition. It’s for In On You.

It was created by Linda Lester with help from John Murphy. Love the theme. I literally squeed the first time I saw it. And it’s stop motion. Oh Em Gee. 1129 frames with Photoshop.

In On You
Lyrics by Shoes

Composed by John Murphy

——-

You said you hadn’t heard this talk before
But I thought you knew
You said you couldn’t take it anymore
But I wasn’t through

The friends and all the men you used to know
Have moved on years ago
It happens when you least expect it
To close in on you

You didn’t think you had it left inside
What more could you do
No one really cared if you had lied
You know that now too

The trouble is the worst ain’t come down yet
There’s what you want then there’s what you get
It happens when you least expect it
To close in on you

You wait and see
Try to put your trust in me and leave it be

We tend to overlook the mounting cost
Of all that we wagered and what we’ve lost
It happens when you least expect it
To close in on you

Still hopin’ for the end to your sadness
It’s long overdue
So tell me what’s the meaning of all this
When things come unglued

The trouble is the worst ain’t come down yet
There’s what you want then there’s what you get
It takes you from behind
Don’t let it close in on you

You’ll finally see when you put your trust in me
But you made it harder than it had to be

Shoes – Say It Like You Mean It

Standard

A video is up from the new Shoes album Ignition. Say it Like You Mean It.

It features a slideshow of pictures from the Millenium Park, Chicago show on August 10, 2007. All pictures are from Steven and Lisa Gardner.

SAY IT LIKE YOU MEAN IT
(Murphy/Klebe/Murphy)

Rollin’ off your tongue
Passin’ through your lips
Words are only words
Without some feeling they can’t be heard

You gotta say it like you mean it
‘Cause I can tell by the tone in your voice
If you want me to believe it
You gotta say it like you mean it

Racin’ through your head
Carefully you choose
The words sent to my ears
They’re so empty and insincere

Wanna hear, loud and clear
Wanna hear, loud and clear

You gotta say it like you mean it
‘Cause I can tell by the tone in your voice
If you want me to believe it
You gotta say it like you mean it

Say it like you mean it
In a way you have before
A lot has come between us
Speak up to save us or the rest’ll take us down

Rollin’ off your tongue
Passin’ through your lips
Words are only words
Without some feeling they can’t be heard

Wanna hear, loud and clear

You gotta say it like you mean it
‘Cause I can tell by the tone in your voice
If you want me to believe it
You gotta say it like you mean it

You gotta say it like you mean it
Words are only words

You gotta say it like you mean it
Words are only words

A great interview with Shoes about the new album, Ignition. Thanks for good questions Ryan Meehan.

First Order Historians

by Ryan Meehan

Shoes, the trailblazing guitar-pop combo from tiny Zion, Illinois — who in the 1970s prefigured the home-recording DIY boom of the ’90s and beyond — will release their first album of new material since 1994 on August 14, 2012.  Ignition switches on with 15 fresh, vital tracks from Shoes’ three founding members and songwriters: bassist-vocalist John Murphy, guitarist-vocalist Jeff Murphy, and guitarist-vocalist Gary Klebe, plus longtime stage drummer John Richardson. Self-produced and released on the band’s own Black Vinyl Records, Ignition not only carries on Shoes’ cult-heroic tradition of edibly tuneful, harmony-honeycombed guitar pop; it ventures intriguingly beyond those comfortable (though undeniably rewarding) borders as well. Altogether the work of seasoned, mature musicians whose singular trajectory as 100-percent self-taught, self-created recording artists has been outside-the-box since it began, Ignition showcases Shoes at their technical and artistic peak.  We are extremely honored to have Jeff Murphy, Gary Klebe…
