When The Dollyrots were making Barefoot and Pregnant and had it up at Pledge Music, I pledged at the “Cover a song for me” level. I requested that they cover the song Cruel You by Shoes. I think I’ve made my love of Shoes quite clear on this blog. One of the first bands in heavy rotation on MTV, one of the best Power Pop bands ever etc etc.
I just got the music file this morning from Kelly. OH. MY. GOD. It is AMAZING. I put together a video for it, using Facebook pics and album art. Please have a listen. You won’t be disappointed.
Here’s another tune from Yuletunes – a compilation of Holiday themed pop songs. It was produced by Jeff Murphy of Shoes fame and you can buy the CD from the band’s website – Shoeswire.com. It’s chock full of sing along, dance around tunes.
Here’s a review of the CD I found – “Original pop/rock songs with a Christmas theme. Melodic, harmony-laden, power-pop Christmas songs from some of the best bands in the genre. A holiday classic. You’ve probably heard these at the mall over the years and didn’t even know it. –CD Baby”
One of the songs is by The Idea and is called It’s About That Time. The first time I heard it, at a Bugaboo Creek restaurant in Atlanta, I shushed my family as soon as I heard the opening guitar sound, I was all “This is a Shoes riff and that might be Jeff Murphy singing.” I already owned the CD, which I hadn’t listened to in its entirety, so started listening to it once we got home and discovered that it wasn’t Jeff singing but it was a Shoes riff. Realized it was from The Things You Do.
I was so jazzed that I immediately emailed Black Vinyl Records with the story and was thrilled to get a response from Jeff himself. 🙂
I’m not one for Christmas songs. If I worked in a mall and had to listen to 6 weeks of traditional songs, I’d probably lose my mind. There are exceptions to this – if I’m in a store and I hear a song from the Yuletunes Christmas compilation, I’ll stand under a speaker and listen to it all. I’ve been known to hush my family in a restaurant when I hear a track.

One of the songs is by Shoes and is called This Christmas. It very well might be my favorite song from John Murphy.
Things’ll get better
Doesn’t seem like it now
But they always do
I hope you find yourself someone this Christmas
The heart is a river
It carries you off as it takes you down
I hope you find yourself someone this Christmas
How often we’re only in need of a place to leave the pain
When Christmas surrounds us
We see the snow replace the rain
Love is a riddle
Like a new toy that’s ruined it gets thrown away
I hope you find yourself someone this Christmas
How often we’re only in need of a place to leave the pain
We’re anxious for Christmas
But without love it’s not the same
Things’ll get better
(Things’ll get better Things’ll get better)
Doesn’t seem like it now
But they always do
I hope you find yourself someone this Christmas
I hope you find yourself someone this Christmas
(I hope you get just what you want this Christmas)
I hope you find yourself
I hope you find yourself
(I hope you get just what you want this Christmas)
I hope you find yourself someone this Christmas
(I hope you get just what you want this Christmas)
I hope you find yourself someone this Christmas
Shoes and Real Gone Music announce the upcoming release of “35 Years: The Definitive Shoes Collection 1977-2012”, a 21-song chronicle of both indie and major label recordings by Shoes.
Just saw this posted as a link on Facebook. Most interesting start to a review of Ignition that I’ve read yet.
“I was never much of a fan of Shoes. For me, listening to Murphy and the boys was the equivalent of going out to eat at the Olive Garden. It’s okay for a change, but I always leave craving something a bit more substantive.
If the old Shoes was a trip to the Olive Garden, their new release, “Ignition”, is an invitation to dine at the Vatican. With the Pope. And he lets you wear the funny hat.”
Thank you for the very early morning laugh, Richard Rossi.
The first official video is up from the new Shoes album Ignition. It’s for In On You.
It was created by Linda Lester with help from John Murphy. Love the theme. I literally squeed the first time I saw it. And it’s stop motion. Oh Em Gee. 1129 frames with Photoshop.
In On You
Lyrics by Shoes
Composed by John Murphy
——-
You said you hadn’t heard this talk before
But I thought you knew
You said you couldn’t take it anymore
But I wasn’t through
The friends and all the men you used to know
Have moved on years ago
It happens when you least expect it
To close in on you
You didn’t think you had it left inside
What more could you do
No one really cared if you had lied
You know that now too
The trouble is the worst ain’t come down yet
There’s what you want then there’s what you get
It happens when you least expect it
To close in on you
You wait and see
Try to put your trust in me and leave it be
We tend to overlook the mounting cost
Of all that we wagered and what we’ve lost
It happens when you least expect it
To close in on you
Still hopin’ for the end to your sadness
It’s long overdue
So tell me what’s the meaning of all this
When things come unglued
The trouble is the worst ain’t come down yet
There’s what you want then there’s what you get
It takes you from behind
Don’t let it close in on you
You’ll finally see when you put your trust in me
But you made it harder than it had to be
