The Monkees – Me & Magdalena

Standard

I know I already did a post about this song but I really love it and wanted to add lyrics and a note that Benjamin Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie wrote about writing it.

‘Before The Beatles, before The Velvet Underground and before punk and/or indie rock, The Monkees were the first band I truly loved. Their albums were always on in our home when I was a kid (especially Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.), and I learned to sing alongside them. I spent countless hours in front of the TV in the ’80s watching Monkees reruns wishing I could climb through the screen and be in the show with them. They made being in a band seem so fun — and goddammit, it should be! For these reasons and a million others, I can say with absolutely zero hyperbole that contributing “Me & Magdalena” to this album has been the greatest honor of my career.’

Me and Magdalena
We’re driving south through Monterey
As the sun is slowly sinking
Into a distant ocean wave

And I don’t know if I’ve ever loved any other
Half as I much as I do and this light she’s under

Tell me Magdalena
What do you see in the depths of your mind
Do you see your long lost father
Does he hold you with the hands you remember as a child

But know everything lost will be recovered
When you drift into the arms of the undiscovered

And I don’t know if I’ve ever loved any other
Half as I much as I do and this light she’s under

Me and Magdalena
Always leaving early and sleeping late
Secluded in the canyon
Lost within a turn of fate

But know everything lost will be recovered
When you drift into the arms of the undiscovered

And I don’t know if I’ve ever loved any other
Half as I much as I do and this light she’s under

The wisdom of a child

Standard

As previously discussed, I’m a Twilight fan. I really like the soundtrack. The songs work so well with the scenes in the movie but they’re also very “listenable to” on their own. I like the ebb and flow of the tracks.

I was listening to the CD this morning with my daughter and I asked her which songs were her favorite. She said she likes the songs by Death Cab for Cutie, Hurricane Bells and Band of Skulls. I love that she already has an eclectic taste in music at 10.

She asked me why I asked her which songs she liked. I said I appreciated that she doesn’t like the music that most kids her age like -you know, TV show bands like Miley and the Jonas Brothers. Her response?

“Well, duh.”

Death Cab For Cutie – Meet Me On The Equinox

Standard

I’ve been a fan of Death Cab since their first album. I’ve been a fan of this song from the first time I’ve heard it. I love New Moon. I love the soundtrack. So many of the songs are perfectly suited for the scenes in which they occur. Of course, this is ending credits music but it still fits the vibe of the story.

Meet me on the equinox
Meet me halfway
When the sun is perched at its highest peak
In the middle of the day
Let me give my love to you
Let me take your hand
And as we walk in the dimming light
Oh darling understand

That everything everything ends
That everything everything ends

Meet me on your best behavior
Meet me at your worst
For there will be no stone unturned
Or bubble left to burst

Let me lay beside you darlin’
Let me be your man
And let our bodies intertwine
But always understand

That everything everything ends
That everything everything ends
That everything everything everything ends

A window
And open too
The sun crawls
Across your bedroom
The halo
A waning moon
Your last breaths
Moving through you

As everything everything ends
As everything everything ends
As everything everything everything everything everything everything ends

Meet me on the equinox
Meet me halfway
When the sun is perched at its highest peak
In the middle of the day
Let me give my love to you
Let me take your hand
And as we walk in the dimming light
Oh darlin’ understand

That everything everything ends
