OWH Design Bootcamp – Creating Relationships

The latest Design Bootcamp is up at Operation Write Home. It’s all about creating strong relationships with design aspects of your card.

Our homework was to, if possible, look back at a previous design and see what we could do to create a better design. I’ve actually already done this with a previous Design Bootcamp – Focal Point. I created this card originally –

I love rainbow order / ROYGBIV. I tweaked a pinwheel design and then added the squiggle strip to reinforce the colorway that I used. Even as I looked at it at the time, I knew something was off. It needed an extra bit but as I’d looked at it so long, I couldn’t see what it was.

In the end, the pinwheel and the squiggles were competing for attention. Paula suggested getting rid of the squiggles and replacing it with a black strip and brads. She was right.

Now, my card for today utilizes the squiggle strip that I’d cut off of the original card.

I used that as the base design element and used four diecut christmas light bulbs to create a pinwheel that could be layered on top. I stamped a simple sentiment and layered it on black as well. I think that the tilted placement of the pinwheel sort of leads the eye to the sentiment, thereby creating a strong focal point. I followed the rule of thirds with the placement of the strip and pinwheel. I used variation with colors and shapes.
